Today’s cameras do a good job of bringing the subject into focus, but all too often, the camera is in shaky hands. This results in blurry photos. You constantly have to be thinking of the camera’s steadiness. Nothing can make a good picture stand out more than pinpoint sharpness. With active subjects, you may need to load your camera with higher-speed film so you can use a fast shutter speed to freeze the action. Otherwise, you’re going to end up with a lot of blurry photos. Two things can happen. First, if your camera is steady and the subject is moving too fast for the shutter speed that you’re using, the background will be sharp and the subject will be blurred. If your camera is not steady, then it’s most likely that the entire picture will be blurred. Once you understand this, you can make adjustments in your technique. 

You can intentionally blur a background, however, to keep the focus of your picture on the subject. Increasing your shutter speed and then compensating by opening up your aperture accomplishes this. This limits the area that is in focus and this is called depth of field. If your subject is far from the background, it will blur the background.

One can’t say enough about the subject of lighting. It is the key to making great photographs. 

When taking photographs outdoors, it is best to have soft light – preferably an overcast day. When it is overcast, the light is diffused and there are no heavy dark shadows; skin seems to glow. There are tricks you can use to manipulate lighting in your pictures. One thing you can use is called a twist fill, which is placed in front of subjects to bring out highlights in their eyes. If you don’t want to purchase a fill, you can use everyday items such as foil, a white bed sheet, white towels or even the foil sun reflector you use to shade your windshield. When you use any type of reflector, it will throw a beautiful soft light into your subject’s face and will cut down on external reflections that would impede soft light. Another thing you can use is your camera’s flash. You can bring out the warmth of an expression or put a twinkle into a subject’s eyes without changing the mood of the portrait. 

An important thing to remember when taking pictures of people is that the viewers’ attention is always drawn to the lightest part of a photo. Photographers use this to their advantage by making sure there are highlights in the eyes of their subject, making them the lightest feature. Highlights are often referred to as catch lights, because they catch a viewer’s attention. 

To learn how different kinds of lighting affect your work, try this exercise. Ask someone to be your model and position her so the sun shines directly on her from the front. Take your photograph. Now have your model shift around so the light strikes her from the side. Again, take a shot. Finally, have her move so the sun shines directly from behind. Take your final shot. When you finish the set of three pictures, repeat the exercise, but this time use your flash as well. For your third set of photos, repeat the lighting positions as before, but this time, instead of using a flash to fill the shadows with light, get yourself a large sheet of white cardboard or buy a twist fill. When you make each photograph, place the card or fill where it will reflect the light into the face of the model. You’ll soon get the hang of where to angle your bounce board for maximum effect.

Now, they can take photographs anytime and anywhere. You can choose to use a single lens reflex (SLR) camera or a point-and-shoot model. The SLR offers many capabilities that the point-and-shoot lacks, such as interchangeable lenses and other accessories that give photographers greater control and flexibility. However, for a beginner, the point-and-shoot camera is a fine choice. It is easy to use, renders good results and is extremely affordable. 

Some basic camera terms will come in handy. Although most cameras now automatically handle focus, aperture and shutter function, having a basic knowledge of what these words mean can be beneficial.

Aperture – The typically adjustable opening in a camera that limits the amount of light passing through a lens or mirror.  

Focus – An apparatus used to adjust the focal length of an optical system to make an image sharp and clear. 

Shutter – A camera device that controls the duration of a photographic exposure by opening and closing. It allows light coming through the lens to expose the film.

Framing and composition are fundamental photography concepts. Great photographs, no matter what the subject, are similar in that there is a center of interest that attracts and holds the eye. The frame is pleasingly filled and the different parts of the composition are balanced. 

Divide your picture into thirds

These two concepts aren’t as difficult to master as you might think. You can practice with or without film in your camera. Look through your viewfinder, taking time to carefully examine the entire scene. Look at the corners, along the sides, and at the top and bottom of the frame. Now, mentally divide the scene before you into thirds. Where the horizontal and vertical lines intersect, place your most important or interesting information. This Rule of Thirds is a successful, time-tested way of composing quality pictures. If you experiment with this method, you’ll soon see an improvement in your photos.

Wide-angle zoom lenses are one of the most important photography lenses that every wedding photographer should have, typically 17mm to 35mm in length with a fixed aperture of f/2.8. They provide a large depth of field, making it simple to have foreground and background in focus. They are an indispensable wedding photography equipment which allows versatility in confined areas such as a small banquet room or crowded dance floor. While shorter photography lenses allow you to capture more details, wide-angle zoom lenses allow you to capture more reactions and atmosphere to tell a richer story.

To elaborate further, wide-angle zoom photography lenses allow you to shoot a wider perspective of moments happening around the major subject, hence providing a bigger picture of the entire event. However, you need to be selective of the scenes or actions using wide-angle photography lenses, as a caveat to shooting wide is that it creates some body distortion, particularly when a subject is photographed close-up. Generally, people tend to look heavier and shorter on the edges, while arms can look huge.

The last thing you want is to have the bride cursing you for making her look like she has put on 10 pounds! To get around this problem, you should as far as possible avoid putting the bride and groom at the edges of the wide-angle distortion. In addition, wide-angle photography lenses might also introduce distracting or unwanted elements into the frame, which would otherwise ruin a picture perfect moment.

Wide-to-Telephoto Zoom

Wide-to-telephoto lenses are the single most important photography lenses that a wedding photographer cannot do without. They should ideally be lenses that cover somewhere around the 20-70mm focal length range with an aperture of f/2.8. This ideal range lets you get wide enough to take a group photograph and close enough to capture facial emotions in your candid shots or a three-quarter portrait of a couple without the undesirable effects of wide-angle perspective distortion. They also double as good lenses for portraits. Given just this lens, you would be able to capture most of the shots needed for a wedding decently well.

Image-Stabilized Telephoto Zoom

Image-stabilized telephoto zoom lenses are also essential items in your wedding photography equipment checklist. The 70-200mm focal length is an important range for wedding ceremony photos. It allows you to give your subjects more space in situations where you don’t want to get in the way.

As you will often be photographing down the aisle from the back of the church, image-stabilized telephoto zoom lenses will come in very handy. 200mm is long enough to be able to take 3/4 length images of the bride and groom exchanging their vows while staying at a reasonable distance away from the action and 70mm is wide enough to take in the bridesmaids or groomsmen as a group without switching photography lenses.

A good point to note is that when using such photography lenses, nice blurred background can be achieved with maximum wide apertures of f/2.8 and long focal lengths of 200mm or 300mm, whether you are using a full-frame or a small sensor body. This allows you to isolate the subject from its background, and to focus attention on the image as the main subject you want to portray.

Such photography lenses are especially useful for shots where you are unable to get in close and for intimate and private moments, where you want to be an unobserved stranger at a distance. Some examples include a stolen glance, a mischievous grin, a kiss – the details that are effectively conveyed by the emotions. Image-stabilized telephoto zoom photography lenses hence play an important role in capturing such moments.

Yet another advantage of such photography lenses is that you can use the small-sensor camera’s 1.5x crop factor to your favor. The 200/2.8 long end of the standard zoom effectively becomes 300/2.8, a lens that would cost $4000 for a full-frame camera.

The effective 300mm length allows for more creative photo angles than shorter photography lenses, such as tightly cropped images of the groom’s hands lifting the bride’s veil or the bride and groom’s hands while they put rings on each others fingers.

The obvious disadvantage of image-stabilized telephoto zooms is that in many cases, long photography lenses tend to disconnect the subject from the main scene and there might be little to no context as to why the subject may have had expressed how they were feeling, the whereabouts of the subject and who else was there.

When using a small-sensor camera as your primary or backup body, the other disadvantage of image-stabilized telephoto zoom lenses is that neither Nikon, Canon or Sony make an f/2.8 lens that gives you an effective 70-200mm focal length. Hence, you would have to pay the high price and carry the weight of photography lenses designed for a full-frame camera.

Canon’s Image-Stabilization, Nikon’s Vibration-Reduction and Sony’s Steady-shot INSIDE systems are indispensable in allowing you to hand-hold these large and heavy long photography lenses, especially in low light situations. Every wedding photographer should ensure that the image-stabilization and vibration-reduction features are available on their long lenses.

You might also want to consider using a tripod to ensure continuous, accurate subject placement and sharp photos. Such telephoto zoom photography lenses are huge investments and if you have a budget constraint or an amateur just starting out, you might want to consider rental instead.

Prime Lenses

Prime lenses are essentially photography lenses with fixed focal lengths, as opposed to zoom lenses, which have variable focal lengths of say 24-70mm or 17-55mm. Prime lenses generally have a better optical quality than zoom photography lenses, and usually come with wider maximum apertures such as f/2.8 or f/1.8.

Good prime lenses are must-have photography lenses for any wedding photographer, as they are excellent for taking good portraits. Although you will be adequately equipped for a wedding shoot with the three zoom lenses in your lens kit as discussed above, it is worth including two to three fast prime lenses in your bag as well. These photography lenses are compact, light, and fairly inexpensive and would probably be needed in about 10 to 20% of a wedding shoot.

Faster prime photography lenses are ideal in situations where f/2.8 aperture is not enough to get the motion-stopping shutter speed or shallow depth of field desired, whether for artistic or technical reasons. For example, an image that requires a 1/20th of a second shutter speed at f/2.8 will only require 1/60th of a second at f/1.8, forming a distinction between a sharp image and a blurry one.

Many professional wedding photographers actually include prime lenses in their gig bags as an economical backup to their zoom lenses. Not many people could afford to purchase an additional 70-200mm f/2.8 telephoto lens as a backup and you also want to prevent a frantic situation whereby your photography lens fails on you during a crucial moment.

There are many prime lenses available on the market but most photographers would include a 28/1.8, 50/1.8, and 85/1.8 in their prime photography lenses kit to be used on a full-frame body. The 28mm is wide enough to cover most ceremony locations and confined spaces, the 50mm is good for small groups or a priest blessing a couple, and the 85mm is long enough for ceremony vows and exchange of rings. A wedding can be successfully photographed with just these three photography lenses.

Although most photo-journalistic wedding photography shoots are done using ambient light, there are situations whereby the lighting situation might not be ideal to turn out good pictures. That is why judicious use of an external flash plays an important role in assuring great shots and happy clients.

A good photojournalist uses the external flash at appropriate moments to complement available ambient light. With a flash mounted at all times, you can address any kind of lighting situation, without having to scramble for one when the need arises. Many a time, the use of flash creates a distinction between getting the shot or not getting it at all. Therefore, there is no need to be so adamant in insisting that you follow the fad of just using ambient light in your photo-journalistic wedding photography shoots.

These are some examples which make the external flash an indispensable asset:-

Indoor shoots

While many couples opt for a casual outdoor solemnization ceremony, there are some others who would prefer to have their ceremonies conducted indoors, such as a hotel ballroom or clubhouse, so that they are not at the mercy of unpredictable weather changes. While shooting indoors, it is practically impossible to expect to shoot using ambient light. The use of an external flash here would ensure that your subjects are correctly exposed.

To prevent harsh shadows being cast behind your subjects, you should at all times avoid pointing the flash directly at them. Try using an omni-bounce or bounce card to soften the flash falling on your subjects, so as to foster an ambient feel and creating atmosphere while reducing the evidence of flash.

Flash can be bounced off the ceiling, walls, wedding gown, a guest’s white shirt or anything available that reflects light well. Bouncing softens the light source by effectively making the source larger and spreading it out in every direction to eliminate hard shadows. Using sideway bounce off a wall can also create side lighting in rooms with very flat illumination and directional effect for simple portraits.

Fill-in flash for outdoor shoots

When faced with a strong back-light situation, the camera’s exposure settings will automatically underexpose the subject to compensate for the bright background. Using a fill-in flash in such situations will illuminate the subject, hence preventing them from being underexposed. It can also be especially useful for keeping eye sockets from getting too dark or to lower the contrast ratio of shadows and highlights in direct sun.

For best results, you should shoot in A mode, and put your external flash on high-speed sync, a function which is available in most TTL flashes. This creates a nicely exposed subject and ambient background. When the subject is close, and the sky is clear or partly cloudy, you can also take advantage of high-speed sync and use a fast shutter along with negative exposure compensation to darken the background, saturate the blue in the sky and add a little drama to the clouds above. Darkening the background here allows your subject to stand out from the background, instead of blending in, hence creating more depth in the picture.

Contrary to the use of bounce flash indoors as explained above, direct flash rules reign for outdoor shots – no diffusers or modifiers, no bounce. Here it’s used as either a slight fill to get rid of harsh shadows, or to bring the subject in balance with the ambient light – usually for strong back-light situations. For fill-in effects, try using strobes at about -1 to -2 power on your flash.

Freezing an action

As events in a wedding evolve so quickly, there will be times you need to freeze an action. Some examples include a couple dancing and a wedding march-in. While shooting without a flash creates the “blurred movements” of an event, shooting with an on-camera flash shows the static action using a faster shutter speed.

How To Take Photos Of The Sun

The most important thing about viewing and photographing the Sun is eye-safety. Never attempt to see the Sun thru any optical instrument without proper filtration otherwise permanent damage to the eye will happen if you are not careful.

There are several filters that can be used to view and photograph the Sun; a cheap and effective alternative is a filter made of solar filter sheet (Mylar). These filters will block UV and IR radiation and will only let a minimum amount of visible light pass thru. They are safe for viewing and photographing the sun as long as the filter is in perfect condition without tears or punctures. You can buy an already made filter or make your own.

The Baader astrosolar sheet is one of the many options you have. There are other filters available and usually if it’s safe for your eye it’s safe for your camera. Buy good quality filters from telescope & astronomy shops. Think that if a filter is safe for your eye thru a telescope then your camera sensor will be perfectly safe.

If you own a DSLR or a point and shoot with an optical zoom, I’m sure that every once in a while you see a beautiful moon and you think about taking a picture of it, especially when the moon is full and beautiful.

There are other times when you spot a news announcement about a Lunar Eclipse and you think about capturing the moment, but do not know how to do it right.

Or you want to capture the moon together with a foreground object such as a house or a lone tree, but the picture is not coming out right because the moon is much smaller and looks like a white blob.

How To Take Photos Of An Eclipse

Use a telescope or telephoto lens with a focal length of 400 millimeters or more:  This helps to get detailed, close-up shots of the eclipse. This will give you a reasonably large image of the sun’s disk in the frame.

Use a sturdy tripod or mount: Make sure your tripod and head are strong and stable enough to support your camera gear. Keep your setup as portable, light and easy to assemble as possible in case you need to relocate in a hurry to escape clouds.

Set the camera to its highest resolution: To record as much detail and color information as possible, use your camera’s highest-quality (least-compressed) JPEG setting or “loss-less” (uncompressed) image formats, such as TIFF or RAW.
