You don’t want to be under prepared, without an outfit you want to wear or your favorite shade of mascara, but you also don’t want to over prepare by running out to a tanning salon and getting a brand new haircut. Each studio is specific, so it’s important to confirm with them exactly what you should do. Here are some helpful tips to help you for your big day.

Glamour photography is all about you and your unique beauty. That said, it’s typically not recommended that you change a lot of things about yourself before the shoot. These pictures are for your significant other and they already love you for who you are. You don’t want a series of photographs of yourself that look nothing like you. New haircuts are a bad idea. There are typically professional hairstylists on hand at any boudoir studio, so keep the hair that your significant other knows and loves. However, if you do want to get a haircut, you’ll want to have it done before the day of shooting. While your hairstylist will be a professional, she may not be permitted to cut or dye your hair as a part of the studio policy.

Tanning is also not recommended before the shoot, unless of course you tan regularly. Again, you want to look like you, so your skin should look how it would normally look. New tans are also a bad idea because they can leave you with multi-colored or red skin that you don’t want in your final product.

Usually there will also be a professional make-up artist at the studio, so you don’t want to overdo it before you leave the house. A modest amount of make-up, just some mascara, is probably all you’ll need before arriving at the studio. While professional cosmetologists are commonplace in boudoir studios, it’s a good idea to get a manicure and pedicure before you arrive. Many studios do not offer this service, and you’ll want to make sure that everything is just right before you begin.

Aside from these physical attributes, there is still one big issue left: clothing. Your clothing, other than you, is the most important thing to consider before your pictures are taken. You need to consider exactly how you want to look, how revealing or modest you want to be, and what kinds of photographs you want in exactly what outfit. Boudoir photography has become increasingly popular in recent years. Either as a wedding present, an anniversary gift, or for no real reason at all, women have found that beautiful, elegant, and often seductive pictures of themselves is a real treat for the significant others in their lives.

Boudoir photography (also known as glamour photography) is a style of photography designed to create a set of sensual images of adult women of all ages, shapes and sizes.  Boudoir literally means a woman’s dressing room or bedroom, and so the bedroom is typically the setting of boudoir photography.  This style of photography has become popular recently as a form of a gift from a woman to her significant other.  Specifically, a collection of boudoir photographs has become fashionable as a wedding gift from the bride to the groom.  Boudoir photography is also popular as a Valentine’s Day, birthday, anniversary or even a surprise “anytime” gift.

P R E P A R A T I O N

One way to ensure that you will come back from your travels with excellent photographs is to prepare before you leave. Begin with research and do lots of it. Read travel guides for information on where you are going and what you are going to see when you get there.

E Q U I P M E N T
It would also be wise to experiment with your photography equipment before your journey begins. Buy some film before leaving, take some test shots and have them developed. Check them over carefully to ensure that your camera is working properly. If there are any problems, have your equipment repaired. Make sure that your camera batteries are fresh, and always carry a second set of the correct type for your camera.

You can never have enough film. Don’t try to save money at the expense of missing a great photo opportunity. If you are flying, do not put your film in baggage you plan to check. High-tech bomb-detecting devices can damage unprocessed film, causing color loss or white streaks in photos. For the most part, modern X-ray machines will not damage your film when scanning unchecked baggage. Therefore, you do not have to invest in an expensive lead film-protection bag. Simply put the film in a clear zip-lock bag, which will make it easier to search (if necessary).

If you find yourself in inclement weather, do not give up. There are ways to protect your camera and still get your shots. You can put a clear filter in front of your lens and tape a plastic bag around the camera. However, if you do not want to risk damaging your equipment, waterproof, single-use cameras are ideal. These inexpensive cameras can even be used while snorkeling down to a depth of about 10 feet. 

Although tripods are not the most easily transported piece of equipment, they are a tremendous help. The steady image that you are assured to see in your pictures may be reason alone to consider bringing one on your trip. Tripods also allow you to set up your composition so that you can study it hands- free or hold out for the perfect lighting.

If you cannot travel with a tripod, use this alternative method to increase your control over the composition: Try resting your elbows on anything that offers solid support, such as a fence or railing. You can also rest the camera itself on the support. Use your fingers as wedges to level the camera and hold it steady. The trick is to watch the edges of the frame carefully and try to notice any vibration or wobble. If you do not see any, then you can be assured of a steady picture.

There is only one source of lighting for landscape pictures – the sun. You cannot control it by using a flash or a twist fill. Professional photographers prefer to emphasize the time of day rather than the type of lighting when making landscape photos. You need shadows to give your pictures a three-dimensional feel. You do not get shadows when the sun is overhead, or just off to one side. They come from strong side light. It is better to choose an angle where the sun does not shine from directly behind the subject or directly at the subject. That’s why it is better to take your photos in the early morning or late afternoon, when light is warmer. Everything in the shot will take on an attractive golden hue and it will reveal interesting textures in all surfaces. 

Photographers should always take advantage of the magic hour. This is the time in the late afternoon when sunlight is warm and there is an abundance of orange and red in the sky. The film in your camera will pick up these warm colors in everything you shoot and your pictures will positively glow. 

One popular landscape photograph is the setting sun, which can be a tricky subject to capture. The brightness of the sun will affect the camera’s light meter, which measures a scene’s light. The result is underexposure of the foreground, creating a silhouette effect. In this situation, it is probably best to bracket the exposure, which simply means adjusting the exposure up or down one or two f-stops and shooting a frame with a couple of different settings

E X E R C I S E S 

Before you venture outside, obtain a book of landscape photographs and find a few that you like. Try to identify what feelings the photos bring out in you and analyze the elements in the pictures that help create those feelings. Is it the light? The perspective? The graphic shapes? Learn all you can from the photos, then go out and try to put those elements into your work. You might go as far as to replicate a photo that you particularly admire. 

Another exercise is to return to one spot at different times of the day. Study how the differences in light affect your photograph. Finally, take a picture of your favorite neighborhood as if it were a spectacular and alien landscape. This is an exercise at looking at the familiar through fresh eyes. Try to see if you can discover something that you have not seen before. One of the secrets of successful photographers is that they have developed the ability to look at the world around them as if for the first time. They continue to discover something new, where others fail to see anything at all.

How many times have you tried to capture nature’s beauty in a photograph, only to end up with a disappointment such as blurry images and too little or too much light? Professional photographers will show you the correct way to capture beautiful landscapes. 

Landscape pictures differ from people pictures. They tell more of a story about nature than a specific happening involving people. This does not necessarily mean that landscape pictures have to be static; perhaps the blowing wind is implied in the picture by the swaying of a tree or by the movement of water. One of the biggest mistakes amateur photographers make is to fail to understand that their camera is merely a dumb viewer; it sees the world strictly in rectangles and in two dimensions. It feels none of the emotions we feel and it experiences none of the inspiration. Therefore, instead of just clicking away at what is before the camera, photographers need to think about how they can construct a picture of what they see.

Ask yourself these questions before you take a landscape picture: What parts of the scene grab you the most? Is it a tree? A mountain? The clouds? If it’s a tree, decide into which third of the frame you wish to place it. Where you place the tree in the picture will help you determine whether you will have a picture that is mostly sky or one that is mostly land or water. If you want your picture to show how high, massive or distant something is, try framing your shot with an object in the foreground that puts your subject into perspective. Remember that the tree should remain the focal point. All quality photographs have a strong center of interest, so you may have to move closer or change your angle of view.

Next, ask yourself what colors or shapes are in the scene. An area of strong color, such as a blue sky, can be used to fill in parts of a picture. You can also use shapes to build your finished picture puzzle. Both contrasting shapes and those that complement one another can lend interest to a scene. Sometimes a small silhouette, because of its power to attract the eye, is all that is required to complete the puzzle. Now, if your photograph depends on the graphic strength of shapes or colors, try to simplify your composition so that they completely dominate the photograph. Focus in tight on the object, rather than including all the surroundings.

Many photographers prefer to make landscapes that really emphasize the horizontal. To achieve this, they use wide angle and very wide angle lenses. Pictures made with these lenses also show great depth of field (everything in the scene from close to as far as the eye can see will be in focus). That tends to give the photograph a three-dimensional feel.

Most landscape photos are built so the eye is led from the foreground through the middle distance and into the far distance. When you take a landscape or scenic photograph, keep your eyes open for graphic elements that draw you into the scene and tie it together. If you do want to take a photograph that captures an entire scene, there is an alternative to spending a fortune on new lenses. Single-use panoramic cameras deliver outstanding results, especially when you consider how inexpensive they are.

Taking pictures of people and landscapes is a piece of cake compared to taking shots of animals. Whether itís your family feline or a jungle tiger, all that is natural and unpredictable in your favorite critters can be a real challenge to capture on film. The most important thing to remember about animals or trophies shots is that you cannot control your composition; it controls you. In many respects, the challenge of making animal photographs is a combination of the challenges posed by taking pictures of people and landscapes Ė lighting, subject matter, proper framing, etc. However, animal subjects are generally more active and uninhibited than people and, obviously, much more so than landscapes. They are also less likely to cooperate. If you can keep this in mind while taking your animal photographs, you will save yourself a large amount of frustration. This inherent spontaneity is just one of the elements that makes trophy shots exciting and rewarding.

P E T S

Pets are usually the first animals most people try to photograph, and, just like people, different animals have distinct personalities. Trying to capture your subjectís true personality can be incredibly difficult. Pets have limited attention spans, so remember to be completely prepared before approaching your subject. You may also want to use a squeaky toy or a piece of string to grab their attention. It takes patience, plenty of film and a good eye for location and background. For example, a working dog like a collie may be your lovable homebound pooch but, in a photograph, it would be best to show him in a field. In all instances, try to keep the backgrounds as simple as possible. Using a flash can also help separate a small animal from a confusing background, as well as help freeze its movement and expression. These precautions guarantee that all attention is focused on the pet. 

As with children, it is especially important to get close and down to a petís eye level. By looking directly at them instead of down on them, as we do in everyday life, you will see the world from their perspective. As with all trophy shots, the eyes have it. When a person looks at a photograph, the first thing he notices is the subjectís eyes. Try to make the eyes the sharpest element of the picture; they can communicate everything you want your photograph say. Use your flash to put highlights in your petís eyes to draw even more attention. 

L A R G E R   A N I M A L S

Perhaps you have a desire for snapping game bigger than your average house kitty. Well, unless you have the time and means to jaunt off on an African photo safari, you’ll find some of the biggest game around at a local zoo or game park. Donít let the settings fool you; the animals are wild, and they are a challenge to photograph. But these photos can be some of your greatest trophies.

If you find a game park that lets you drive among the animals but you canít roll the windows down, try this technique. Stop the car, turn off the engine (to prevent any shaking) and put your camera lens tightly against the glass. Ensure that there is no sun shining directly on that portion of the glass. Now, frame your subject and shoot away. You will obtain steady shots, and you shouldnít see any reflections in your final photos. It’s a great technique; experiment with it. 

If you canít stop the car, hold the camera with your hand and try to absorb the shock of the car with your body. You will also want to use a faster shutter speed and a faster speed film. That will eliminate any blur you may get and will compensate for any movement that you are not able to completely absorb with your body. 

It is always a smart idea to stay behind any moats, barriers or walls that are available when taking big game trophy shots. You want to leave the scene with all of your limbs intact!
