If you don’t have a particular location in mind to take these pictures, we would suggest a location in one of the beautiful parks around Denver. Engagement pictures can be taken at any time prior to your ceremony – summer or fall being the best time to take advantage of the beautiful gardens or colorful foliage of the park for your background.

We take approximately 20 pictures using different poses and different backgrounds.  We have a 4×6 color print made of each picture from which you choose your favorite one.  We then take your favorite and have a custom 8×10 made.  You receive the 8×10, all the 4×6’s, and all the negatives.  This service is $175 and is available only to couples who have booked a wedding date with Advantage.

Many couples would like some of the pictures taken before the ceremony, but they don’t want to see each other until the ceremony actually begins. These pictures can be taken in several ways.  If the bride and groom would rather not see each other before the ceremony,  pictures of the groom, groomsmen, and the groom’s family could be taken.  We like to allow at least 30 minutes to take these pictures. If there is enough time at this point, (and after hiding the groom) formal and family pictures of the bride, bridesmaids, and the bride’s side of the family could be taken. The 30 minutes left before the start of the ceremony would be used to take candid pictures such as guests arriving, guests signing in, general ceremony preparation, the bride and her bridesmaids fixing hair, applying makeup, and other fun pictures.  Pictures of family members being seated by ushers and the lighting of candles are also important pictures.

Many couples would like to have all the pictures taken before the ceremony.  

If the bride and groom prefer to have all the formal and family pictures taken prior to the ceremony, we generally begin with the groom, his groomsmen, and the groom’s side of the family.  We would then take the bride, the bridesmaids, and the bride’s side of the family.  After finishing with the bride’s side, we would bring both sides together and finish the formal and family pictures.  Depending on the size of the wedding party and the families, this picture taking session generally takes from 1 to 1 1/2 hours. So if your ceremony was scheduled to begin at 2:00pm, you would want to start taking pictures about noon.

Some couples would rather wait until after the ceremony to take all the formal and family pictures.

If the you prefer to do all the formal and family pictures after the ceremony,  you would need to allow a minimum of 1 hour to complete the pictures (average size wedding).   In this situation, you must also be aware of any time limitations you may have for occupying the church ceremony area.

Ceremonies can last anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 1/2 hours.  The start of the ceremony in usually indicated by the seating of the mother of the bride by the ushers.  We generally like to take pictures of those wearing corsages who are being escorted to their seats.  Pictures of the bridal party (processional) walking down the aisle will be taken individually or with escorts.  Of course, this includes the bride and her escort.

Traditional ceremony pictures may include the ring exchange, exchanging of vows, lighting the unity candle, communion, presentation of gifts, license signing, the kiss, etc.  We also like to take candid and special effects pictures during the ceremony.  Special effects may include soft effects, starburst, and hazy effects.  A lot depends on the lighting and size of the ceremony area.  Unless otherwise instructed, we generally like to stay a safe distance from the ceremony area as to not interfere.  Generally, the last pictures to be taken are the kiss and the bride and groom walking back up the aisle.

Some churches do not allow flash pictures during a ceremony.  There are a few churches that do not allow any photography whatsoever during the ceremony. If you are in doubt, ask your minister or wedding coordinator if there are any rules concerning photography.  If flash pictures are not allowed, we simply do a series of tripod, no-flash pictures. These consist of general ceremony activity and special effects.  Of course, a lot will depend on the available light in the ceremony area.

Usually, a combination of overhead lighting combined with some window light is sufficient to accomplish these pictures. Even though the type of pictures may be limited by a no flash policy, we can still sufficiently capture the essence of the ceremony.

If having a receiving line after the ceremony will take away too much time from your pictures, there are alternatives.  The most popular alternative is greeting your guests at the reception.  This is usually done by the bride and groom after they finish eating.

Normally the bride and groom will lead a buffet line or be served first if it is a sit-down dinner, therefore, they will be finished eating before their guests.  This will leave time for the bride and groom to walk around to the various tables (while the guests finish) and greet their guests.  We follow you around and get many candid pictures of you interacting with your guests.  This usually provides excellent candid pictures full of fun and laughter.

I have been involved in a few projects for the SWPP including charity shoots organised by Mavis Roper (founder of leading model agency boss) where photographers got the chance to shoot models in ideal locations to build up there portfolios. The quaifaications are internationally recognised and much more useful than most degree or college courses as they have a mentor system where you can work as you learn and still make money.

I would recommend membership for any photographer as the seminars and workshops are great to learn new techniques and network.

Photography Battle of Hastings

Local photography enthusiasts from around Hastings will be showcasing over 100 images on Hastings Pier over the next few days.

The photographers showcasing their work are all members of the Channel Hastings group from Flickr.

182 members add to this forum and both local residents and visitors to Hastings are exhibitingadding up to in more than 4,000 photos being taken in the historical Hastings, 1066 Country.

This Sunday (August 3) the majority of these photographs will be on display. Exhibits of work from the ‘clubs’ latest project, Three Colours, Red, White and Blue, are on show between 11am and 5pm.

Visitors are being asked to vote for their favourite photograph and the winning entry will be announced  after 4pm von Sunday.

This exhibition is showing off the talents of photographers who are local or have travelled to Hastings to admire the historical background and beauty of the area. It should also promote tourism to the area.

The Photo Display is on from Monday July 14 until August 17.
Any budding photographers and Hastings fans should sign up for a Flickr account for free and after joining Flickr they can then participate in the Channel Hastings group and join in the next photo challenge.

Dr. Bernard Lewinsky is using photography to help cure Cancer! No its not instead of drugs or radiation but photography is being used as a tool to calm patients and make them feel more relaxed whilst going through treatment.

The American Oncologist is a budding photographer and uses his photography to de stress himself he then started using his images to help relax his patients.

The hospital lost that cold sterile environment and became a much brighter colourful place.

Patients don’t feel as though they are coming in forradiation therapy so much as they are enjoying a day at an art gallery.

Dr Lewinsky has even set up a monitor on the radiation chamber to show slides of images whilst the patients are receiving treatment.

A peaceful, serene environment instills calm, I suppose that is why I am stressed… from my messy desk!

Fashion Photographer Richard Warren is this weeks muse, a US Photographer from Texas has now become renouned for his images all over the world and is settled in the hustle and bustle of New Yorks fashion center, Manhatten.

Warren’s work has been published all over the work and has made his father a journalist for the local newspaper very proud.

Richard didn’t just fall into his fame he started from a humble begining, at the tender age of 15 he moved to the Pacific Northwest where worked as a fisherman in Alaska but working hard studied part time at Western Washington University where he got a degree in Graphic Art. At the age of 21 he began assisting great photographers based in New York such as Bill King,Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton and Denis Piel.
Warren’s big break came when he was twenty-six he was living in Milan and was given the chance to do a 30 page Couture editorial in Italian Bazaar, it was his chance to shine and he was given the oportunity of shooting Valentino, and other premier couture designers.

He furthered his career in Milan then Paris then across the other side of the world to Sydney Australia for Australian Vogue, he began shooting internationally for a number of top fashion magazines.

Warren returned to New York in 1990 where his career settled into a profitable lifestyle in fashion photography.In 2001 Warren stepped away from commercial work and experimented with the digital world this passion developed and Warren commissioned a22-mega pixel state-of-the art, digital studio based in the center of Manhattan’s Garment district. Warren still shot traditional film whilst on location, but his up-to-the minute knowledge and research of digital workflow captures pre to post production and everything is available to clients ‘in-house’.
